I wish to have it distinctly understood, that I do not propose to give a complete manual of the social and moral duties of young women.
The original goal of this work was to clarify Mencken’s views on women as inconsistently presented in newspaper columns, reviews, and plays.
There is no aristocracy here which has the right and title to set the fashions.
My interest in woman and our common humanity is my only apology for writing this book.
Woman, first and foremost, was his game. Every woman attracted him. No woman held him. Any new woman, however plain, immediately eclipsed her predecessor, however beautiful.
